Darkness. All around me. Dry, hot, grainy. That’s all I could feel. I try to open my eyes, but can’t. I try with all my might to move something, any part of my body. My left arm twitches, aching from years of deconditioning. I scream in agony, groaning as I continue to snake my hand upwards out of the darkness. At last, I break the surface but still feel dry heat. Where am I? I groan again as I try to wiggle out, but I realize I am not going anywhere. Something touches me. I feel intense pulling in my hand. I scream, “Ouch!” It quickly lets go. I feel the graininess moving away from my hand and the hot air moving in to take its place. My hand is free! I move my fingers around, oh how wonderful it feels to move. “Help me!” I cry out, trying with all my might to break free of the darkness. After some time my eyes open and adjust to a setting sun and sand. Lots and lots of dry, hot, grainy sand. My prison of darkness.
Where am I? This is not my home. Where did all the lush trees and vegetation go? Where is the bubbling brook that flowed, providing water to birds and deer that played in the flowered fields? Nothing remained of the world I knew and loved. Sand had taken its place.
In front of me I see this human sitting in shock and awe at me. I slowly sit down next to him, stretching my limbs. “Thank you for digging me out, I am Elsha.” The human suddenly blinks hard and realizes that he had been staring, introducing himself as Reoth asks, “What are you and where did you come from?” I tell him I am a Shardmind from Tyr. Reoth looks as me in confusion, “I’ve never heard of a Shardmind.” I sigh as I realize how much time must have passed while I was in my prison of darkness. As the sun slowly begins to set, I close my eyes and tell Reoth what I can remember.

I try to piece together my fragmented memories and begin telling Reoth of my people, my family. I was married and had a son. We lived with the tribe in the middle of a forest. The Dragon King had begun hunting our people to use us as energy cells. We did our best to defend ourselves but slowly bit by bit our tribe was whittled down to almost nothing. I became the Chief of those that remained from my tribe and was given the staff of my people. I took an oath to protect my people and protect the staff from the Dragon King at any cost…
There was a big battle. The Dragon King ambushed us and tried to take us all out at once. I saw my people being slaughtered before my eyes, my husband…my son. The sounds of anguish still echo in my mind. I become cornered by soldiers of the Dragon King. They try to take the staff from me and as a last ditch effort I summon all my power and absorb the staff into my body so as to keep it from the Dragon King. In frustration the soldiers drag me to the center of my village to the Dragon King. In anger the Dragon King turned me to stone so that he might be able to get the staff from me one day. Slowly the world turned black…I could feel that time was passing, but I was unable to do anything. My mind, my memories, they were slowly fading.

As I tell Reoth my story I could feel the hatred and pain welling up inside once again. The sadness in Reoth’s face is evident and he offers his sympathy and his assistance. I tell him I want to go to Tyr, to my home, my people. The world I was in now was not the world I remembered. I wanted to go back to where it all started and to see all the changes. Reoth agreed to accompany me and we planned to set out at first light.
